The St Croix history of civilization in the Virgin Islands.

St Croix was originally inhabited by tribes of Arawaks and Carib peoples. Christopher Columbus discovered the Virgin Islands in 1493. Columbus believed that he had made it to India!

Christopher Columbus went on to new discoveries and the Spanish abandoned the island. Over time other Europeans began making the journey to the area. In the seventeenth century, the Dutch and English settled St Croix. Eventually the Dutch abandoned their settlement and the Spanish gained control in 1650. They were immediately removed from power by the French!

St Croix history shows that the Danish bought the island back from the French in 1733. Virgin Island history states that the island was a part of the Danish West Indies and became a major force in sugar production.
St. Croix History

A Major Virgin Island History Milestone

In 1917, all of the Virgin Islands were sold by Denmark to the United States of America for $25 million in gold. In 1936 the passing of “The Organic Act” made St Croix self-governing.

Throughout St Croix history, the island has flown seven different flags. It has been colonized by Spain, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, the Knights of Malta, Denmark, and the United States.
