Drive to Point Udall and you will be at the Eastern most point of the United Sates! Take the top off your Jeep and tour the West End to see the lush, beautiful Rain Forest. In between, there are local restaurants, shops and beaches. There are self-guided driving tours that point out historical sugar plantaion ruins, Christopher Columbus' landing site from his second voyage, and the beautiful flora and fauna that blanket St. Croix. Christiansted is located on the North Shore of the island. It rests on the harbor with a boardwalk for convenient access to local businesses. Stroll the streets where you will find a multitude of shops, boutiques, and specialty shops. There are many restaurants to choose from, which serve breakfast, lunch and dinner or just stop in to get a drink while you stroll through the streets. Nightlife is abundant with sunset harbor cruises, live music and karaoke at local clubs. Parking in town is limited to 2 hours on the street, but there is a Government Parking Lot at King Cross Street and Strand.
Point Udall is the Eastern most point of the United States. The point sits high on a hill and is the first place the sun rises in the U.S., which makes for an awesome picnic at breakfast time. The drive up to the point is nothing short of breathtaking. The turquoise waters lie below you and once at the point you can see for miles! What a terrific photo opportunity.
This is the ONLY under water National Park in the Caribbean. You can't take your car to Buck Island, but you can get there by boat and spend the day on the beach and snorkel the fabulous trails of brightly colored coral. There are hiking trails through out the un-inhabited island if you want to explore more. Buck Island is an everyday favorite among Crucians.
Frederiksted is located on the west end of St. Croix with a beautiful waterfront promenade and shops. It is home to the island's main pier and historic Fort Frederik, which dates back to the 1800's. You can spend the day on any of the beaches just outside of town or walk through the Victorian style boutiques and restaurants. Locals claim "West is Best" for spectacular sunsets. Parking is limited to street sides.
St. Croix is known for incredible SCUBA diving and snorkeling. Our island is unique in that there is such a variety of diving from one end of the island to the other. Dive the pier and old ship wrecks out west in Frederiksted, The Wall at Cane Bay, or Long Reef right in front of Christiansted. Some dive operators even offer thrilling Night Dives! These are just a few of the diving spots, but there are many more all around the island. Be sure to go with an experienced guide who can show you all the underwater beauty St. Croix has to offer.
The advantage of renting a car in St. Croix is going at your own pace. Don't pass up the opportunity to take a leisurely drive through St. Croix's rain forest on the west end of the island. The road is shaded entirely by enormous mahogany, palm, papaya, tamarind and mango trees. The ground is covered with variety of vegetation like Mother-In-Law's Tongue, elephant ivy, casha and tan-tan. Take a break at the Domino Club to visit the famous drinking pigs and enjoy a refreshing drink and johnny cakes.
St. Croix is spotted with beautiful beaches, but this one takes the cake. Sandy Point has been featured in numerous movies and was the ending scene in the box office hit Shawshank Redemption. Sandy Point is a National Wildlife Refuge and home to many nesting birds and turtles. The beach covers the entire point so there is plenty of room to hang out, bring a lunch, snorkel and relax the day away.
